Shear Design in Reinforced Concrete: Recent Advances and Future Code Changes

The past three decades witnessed a considerable amount of research on the shear behavior of reinforced concrete members. This research focused mainly on studying phenomena such as size effect, high strength concrete, effect of axial tension and compression, and repair for shear using FRP materials.

It also focused on more rational modeling of the shear behavior and on better modeling of the concrete and steel contributions to shear strength. Changes found their way to some national building codes and not to others.

This seminar summarizes some of the major advancements and lessons learned about shear, and about the changes expected in the future issues of the ACI building code, which is commonly used in Kuwait.
